What's the Problem with just using whatever I want?
Speaking with the webmaster at Printing-Quote.US we asked this question. Printing-Quote.US is a leading online site for Print Buyers and Purchasing managers to locate printing companies. "Our site makes it so easy to locate a printing company by state, then, city. A buyer can find a printer to do business with online easily. Our site has about 5000 or so printers listed from every state in the US. The site's stats have more than doubled over same period last year and people are really starting to buy printing online. Printing Companies who take orders off our site report a big problem with files submitted. Designers are creating many many issues and sending them downstream. For online web to print business, print on demand, this is a critical issue facing online printing companies. We recommend the tool FreeFlight, it's freware tool, the first and only free preflight software, and use of the best file formats.
Best Graphics File Formats to Use:
There are many reasons to NOT use Jpeg. EPS does kind of force a professional requirement but I never build anything with EPS unless it's features are required. Many people do, and EPS is a great format, but Tiff has many many advantges that make it more reliable and actually faster to process. In a catalog by example, will process atleast twice as fast when tiffs are used in Quark Xpress as opposed to EPS. Since catalogs are so heavily image intense they can be a huge load and simply choosing to use Tiff can save huge amounts of time. Read More Graphic Design... |

using Preflight Checklist Adobe InDesign Preflight Checklist for graphic Design
I have a new preflight checklist that I found in a great article. It's a good way to review all the things I need to check for before sending a job out. As I run through this preflight checklist there's no problem. But I have others calling me about missing fonts they need. So, I am having an issue of collecting for output or (preflight and package) the fonts used in illustrator files? Here's a link to that prepress checklist, very nice:

To be sure that my Adobe Illustrator files, I am working in Adobe Illustrator CS2, will hand off without missing fonts, I always embed them and save my illustrator files as EPS. I never use an .ai file as a placed graphic. Or .psd for that matter because they are not as reliable as an eps and tiff will. But I have discovered that when you save as .eps with fonts embedded, InDesign does not copy and package the fonts used in the Adobe Illustrator CS2 file?
If you save as an .eps without fonts embedded, InDesign WILL package the fonts used in your Adobe Illustrator file?
Whichever method, unless you have the font installed you CANNOT edit the illustrator file (it will prompt you for the missing font), although the file will printed correctly from the Indesign file with the illustrator .eps file (with fonts embedded) placed into it. So, if there's an edit required at the printing company or service bureau, they will need those fonts even if I embedded them into that EPS file. Anybody know how to remedy this problem with Adobe InDesign CS2 preflight and package limitation? I am better with Quark Xpress and maybe I am missing something. But, I do use InDesign every day and know it (pretty well) too. |

I was reading an article the other day after looking on google about a preflight problem. InDesign's CS2 built in preflight has some real holes in it that I had gotten burned by. InDesign CS 2 built in preflight is pretty good and I had started using it. Markzware's FlightCheck has become so slow and is not actually keeping up anymore. InDesign's built in preflight has been working pretty good for me.
But if your customer places an RGB image inside an EPS or PDF (happens all the time). Adobe InDesign's built in preflight WILL NOT see that RGB. This is a gaping hole in preflight coverage. So, I found and downloaded a free utility that I read about in this article. It is free and very fast. All you do is drop a folder of placed images, like your links folder onto it, drag n drop. The application called FreeFlight will report back on images. DOES catch the embedded images that InDesign's built in preflight will miss. Has anybody else tried this software? I am thinking I will email a link to all my printing customers so they can use it before sending me all these bad files.
